How to Change the Air Filter on a Walk Behind Lawn Mower

Your walk behind lawn mower is composed of multiple components that keep the machine functioning properly. The air filter provides proper air induction into the engine and allows the engine to run a lot cleaner. If you have a plugged air filter, the engine will want to run a lot richer, which will either suck dirt into the engine or have a problem where the machine won’t run correctly or run too rich. That being said, it’s important to replace the air filter regularly to keep you machine up and running all season long. Here’s how to change the air filter on a walk behind lawn mower.

Before performing any maintenance on your lawn mower, refer to your owner’s manual for maintenance instructions and safety information. Maintenance instructions vary by model, so depending on your lawn mower model our instructions may vary slightly.

Before changing the air filter on your mower, please abide by these safety precautions:

  • Shut off the lawn mower engine and allow it to cool
  • Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting and tuck it out of the way so the wire doesn’t make contact with the spark plug

To change the air filter on your walk behind lawn mower, remove the cover of the air filter. Unscrew the bolt holding the air filter casing on your machine to expose the air filter.

Pull up on the air filter to remove it. If you spot any dirt or debris on the top, clean it off because you don’t want anything falling into the carburetor, which can, in turn, be sucked inside the engine.

Install the new air filter. Refer to your owner’s manual for the approved type of manufacturer replacement parts needed. Push the new air filter down and replace the cover. Make sure the cover is free of any debris or any grass caught in the top.

Refasten the bolt until it is tight and then you can reconnect the spark plug ignition wire.

The longevity of your walk behind lawn mower depends on the care and maintenance you provide it. Changing the air filter on a regular basis will keep dust and debris out of the engine and keep your mower running efficiently.
