About Us

Thank You for Helping us Mow Down Hunger!

All of your generous donations, along with a little push from our 100% match, helped Gleaners raise more than 1 million meals for kids in need! Thank you to everyone who helped make this campaign a success.

All donations made during the Mow Down Hunger Campaign from southeast Michigan will benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank, from western Michigan will benefit Feeding America West Michigan and from Washtenaw County will benefit Food Gatherers.

Gleaners Backpack Program

More than 300,000 children in our area rely on free or reduced-fee meals while in school. On the weekend, they often go without meals. In partnership with local schools, Gleaners distributes BackPacks filled with nutritious food each Friday to boys and girls in need. The BackPacks include fruit, vegetables, healthy protein and grains – enough food to provide six meals for hungry children over the weekend. Currently, our BackPack program serves children in 38 schools. But, 87 other schools remain on a waiting list to join.

Gleaners Mobile Pantry Program

Gleaners’ School-Based Mobile Pantry program reaches hungry children in high-need communities. Each distribution provides up to 150 households with 35-40 pounds of nutritious food, including frozen meat and fresh produce. We anticipate being able to provide 50 distributions each month, serving 7,500 families.

For more than 38 years, Gleaners Community Food Bank has been "feeding hungry people and nourishing our communities.” Last year, Gleaners distributed 34 million pounds of emergency food to more than 510 partner soup kitchens, shelters and pantries in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Livingston and Monroe counties. Of every dollar donated, Gleaners uses 94 cents for food and food programs. One dollar provides three meals for a hungry neighbor.

Feeding America West Michigan

Since 1981, Feeding America West Michigan has served as West Michigan's regional nonprofit clearinghouse for saved, donated food on its way from the food industry to churches and charity agencies that assist needy people.

The food we distribute is drawn primarily from the surpluses and edible/useable errors of local and national food and grocery products companies. Through our seven warehouses, we serve 1,300+ food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, domestic violence shelters, rescue missions, and other charity agencies across 40 Michigan counties (the western third of the Lower Peninsula and entire Upper Peninsula) who in turn provide that food aid to approximately 100,000 needy families of West Michigan each year. In 2009, we distributed over 24.5 million pounds of food and other goods, that's over a million pounds every 15 days.

Food Gatherers

Food Gatherers exists to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes in our community by: reducing food waste through the rescue and distribution of perishable and non-perishable food, coordinating with other hunger relief providers, educating the public about hunger, and developing new food resources.

Food Gatherers is not only Michigan’s first food rescue program, but the first program of its kind to be founded by a for-profit business, Zingerman’s Delicatessen. In 1997, Food Gatherers also assumed responsibility for the county food bank. Today, it is an independent 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization governed by a board of directors and operated by 22 staff people and more than 5,000 different dedicated volunteers. Food Gatherers is now the primary distributor of food in Washtenaw County.
